The Club’s 3-bay cricket practice nets are coming to the end of their useful life. The deterioration in the artificial surfaces has been such that for safety reasons, usage has been restricted, in particular for junior members. Additionally, the run-up areas suffer from mole attacks leading to the formation of holes and hollows which are a tripping hazard for bowlers. It is anticipated that, without refurbishment, the facilities would be unusable within 2 years.
The SITA Trust grant will enable the Club to restore the practice facilities to ‘as new’ condition. All of the safety concerns will be addressed and the availability of first class facilities will enable the Club to grow participation.
Mark Pritchard MP said: “I am delighted to have been able to present this cheque to Shifnal Cricket Club on behalf of SITA Trust. Having had the opportunity to speak to those who run the club and to see for myself the condition of its current facilities, I am confident that this money will be put to very good use indeed.”
Peter Houlston, Chairman of Shifnal Cricket Club said “The Cricket Club’s motto is ‘Encouraging participation, nurturing talent’ and it has become increasingly difficult to deliver on this promise. Cricket skills are honed by practice. Net facilities, fit for purpose, are the bedrock for developing the many youngsters that belong to our Club. We are very grateful for SITA Trust’s financial support. As a result, our Cricket Junior Manager and national award winning coach, Kevin Humphreys, will have improved facilities to nurture the cricketers of tomorrow”
Marek Gordon CEO and Chairman of SITA Trust added “We are delighted to have been able to support this project through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.2 billion.”
