The Labour motion that Telford should have its own Police Commander.
What Andrew Eade said:-
- “Speaker we do understand some of the sentiments expressed in this motion and also share some of the concerns. However and once again this motion does not take account of the existing and proposed policing situation facing Telford and Wrekin and is perhaps included here at a very premature stage for domestic reasons rather than one of maturely representing the Borough’s interests and needs.
- As I understand the current situation, West Mercia police have trialled a new model in Worcestershire which has shown some distinct advantages.
- It is right and proper that the police respond to different pressures and issues across different areas to provide the policing which communities want and how they are directed centrally by national government.
- No organisation can sit still and hope that existing structures will cope with differing needs. Due to lack of planning controls - Telford is changing rapidly and policing requirements will need to change with it.
- With regard to any future changes I note that the Chief Constable recognises that one size does not fit all and what is happening in Worcestershire would not be appropriate for Telford & Wrekin
- The Chief Constable has also stated that he will engage with this Council before any decisions are made.
It is vital therefore - before considering the knee jerk motion we have before us – that we fully engage, understand, and play full part in the coming process in a balanced, constructive and grown up way.
- That aside – although I do believe that policing is essentially a matter for the police – however it is not theirs and theirs alone.
- Telford has specific and deep seated issues which demand a concentration of resources - and had the motion concentrated on that argument rather than be used to fulfil a threat by this Authority - we could have supported the motion wholeheartedly and completely
- I was hoping for a brand new dawn, with this Council reaching its full potential and able to influence and lead on behalf of the community – and not flail around looking for someone or something to attack.
- As I said before - the Borough is rapidly changing and this Authority needs to change rapidly with it.
Conservatives did vote in favour of the Labour Administration’s motion on the grounds that discussions need to take place to achieve the most appropriate policing for the specific needs of Telford.
