Councillor Nigel Dugmore has spoken out in reaction to the publication by Telford and Wrekin Council on school catchment areas. He has stated:
"Many Muxton School parents have reacted with dismay that Muxton Primary
school pupils will now be in catchment for Telford Priory School rather
than Burton Borough School.
The recommendation to Telford and Wrekin Cabinet makes a mockery of the so called public consultation excercise which Muxton parents overwhelmingly rejected.
Other secondary schools have shared catchment areas, why Muxton can't be in a shared catchment for Burton Borough is bizarre.
The Telford Priory School is not easy to get to, with only one overcrowded bus from Muxton. On foot children will have to cross busy roads by Asda, Donnington Wood and use dark
underpasses.
The proposals are a triumph of political dogma and social engineering over common sense and the will of parents.
Potential savings, as the Council will not need to provide transport, will not be
realised for several years. Much of the new housing in Newport has not
been built so why change things now?
Due to the reduction of secondary school places and the increase in new housing as a result of this Labour administrations lack of planning, a future Conservative administration will conduct a review of both school places and catchment areas."
