Cllr Eade said “We had a very clear policy on waste which included successful opposition to a proposed incinerator in the borough and with simply dumping waste costing the council millions in landfill charges we decided to provide a state of the art recycling and bulking facility to allow waste disposal in an existing incinerator.”
“Although requiring a substantial initial investment of £4.0 million, this would be quickly recouped by selling recycled material and dealing with trade waste which together after running costs would have poured over £2.0 million every year into council coffers. Initial work was due to start on the plant last July but funding was scrapped by the current Labour Administration who claimed it as a saving?”
“Despite questions to the responsible Cabinet member no clear alternative policy seems to exist and with the clock ticking on the increasing cost of landfill charges it is imperative that the council itself receives this income to support other services.”
