Telford and Wrekin Labour councillors have announced that they are to employ a dedicated director of children’s services at a salary of £130,000.
Conservative councillor Stephen Burrell accused the Labour administration of unnecessarily spending a huge amount of money just to increase the wage bill rather than invest in front line services.
He said that the Conservatives had deleted the post twelve months ago and transferred the responsibilities to the remaining director.
“It is becoming quite clear that once again they are prepared to pay a fantastically high wage for one extra job at a time when the council is making other posts redundant.
I urge them to consider alternative arrangements and joint working with other authorities before they simply run out of money and are forced to hike up council tax or cut services.”
