Despite pledging to reduce debt the new Labour Administration running T&W Council has borrowed the equivalent of £1 million pounds for every month in office following the local elections last May.
This borrowing has increased the council’s budget deficit by over £500,000 equivalent to an extra 1% on council tax.
Cllr Eade said “I find it staggering that after making a great play of reducing debt that the Labour group have already borrowed nearly £7 million in the 8 months since coming to power.”
“When we incurred borrowing to invest in the borough’s future we made huge savings to pay for it and also reduced council tax to a record low making Telford and Wrekin the 4th lowest unitary in the country.”
“It now all becomes very clear why Labour are hoping to push up council tax to 3.5% to help fund their expenditure at a time when budgets are under huge pressure everywhere.”
