Labour left Britain with the biggest budget deficit in its peacetime history. At £157.1 billion in 2009-10, the budget deficit was the largest in our peacetime history (ONS, Public Finances Statistical Bulletin, 21 August 2013, Table PSF1).
Unemployment up by nearly half a million under Labour. When Labour left office, 428,000 more people were unemployed than when they took office – an increase of over 20 per cent (ONS, Labour Market Statistics, October 2011, Table A02, link).
