A Newport borough Councillor has slammed the Labour Administration running Telford & Wrekin Council for reneging on an undertaking to arrange an alternative venue for the controversial planning meeting that will decide the future of Newport’s huge Housing and supermarket development.
Despite giving an undertaking to switch the venue to allow several hundred expected residents to attend and witness the proceedings to make their feelings known, a decision has now been made to use the Civic Offices as usual that will severely limit to a handful the number of people expected to attend.
Cllr Meredith said “There is unparallel concern and anger in Newport at the sheer arrogance and greed of this council and the way it is conducting itself over this fiasco that will see the council gain over £20 million if it gives itself permission for its own planning application.”
“We have already seen the £20 million windfall included in the authorities budget and now we have had to suffer work on the site, even before any planning permission has been granted. Now they are simply seeking to gag opponents and prevent hundreds of residents attending the meeting on the pretext of legal advice.”
“This greedy and shoddy farce has brought the council’s so called impartiality into question and the so called Co-operative Labour authority into disrepute” he added.
