Telford & Wrekin Council has sent letters to traders in New Street, Wellington threatening them with £1000 fines if they do not remove displays from in front of their shops.
The Borough Council has now said that they can continue to display their wares in front of their shops until a £50 pavement licence comes into force. (The budget consultation included a question as to whether to introduce a Pavement Tax, so it looks as though they have decided to introduce it anyway regardless of the result of the consultation.)
Hilda Rhodes the cabinet member for transport says that the £50 will cover the cost of administering the scheme – which of course they would not need if they did not introduce the scheme in the first place.
