The need for a new box road development is questionable and T&W Council spending millions of pounds will merely cause a huge amount of upheaval over the next 18 months.
Major work is about to start on the box road around the Town Centre. This is not without controversy. When the box road was first established it was made one way because it was feared that it would be too dangerous to have traffic flowing in both directions.
The new box road system will be 2.7 miles instead of the current 0.6 mile, and it will take much longer to get around the shopping centre because of all the junctions. The well used and well lit subway along Woodhouse Central will be lost and replaced with potentially dangerous pedestrian road crossings which will again cause hold ups.
The two way system is going to make it difficult, if not impossible to access the car parks leading to another reduction in car parking space.
The box road is costing £11.8, £7million of which is Government grant, £2 million private money, and the rest £2.8million from the local tax payer.
Conservatives were against this when they were in power.
